Straightforward and to the point, Filibuster Single Estate Single Barrel Wheated Bourbon is a no-nonsense sip.
Filibuster Distillery was initially based in Washington, DC, not far from the Capitol Building (hence the name), before moving to Virginia. The company prides itself on strong character and freedom of expression. Known for their finished whiskeys, the company takes a different approach for this release, focusing more on a pure bourbon expression. For their Single Estate Single Barrels, the company isn’t shy about providing information either. The back of the bottle lists the water source, fermentation duration, barrel entry proof, barrel type, and the person who filled the barrel, among other pieces of information. While the exact mashbill is undisclosed, the company states that the grains came from HWK Farms.
A light yet pleasing aroma opens the sip that skews towards sweet scents thanks to the bourbon's presumably higher wheat component. Caramel, dinner rolls, wheat grain, and kettle corn rest atop an earthy base. The midpoint continues to focus on sweeter flavors along with youthful oak and spice notes. The finish slams the brakes on things, bringing out quick hits of chewy oak, cinnamon spice, and vanilla before quickly stopping the train to let you off. While the midpoint shows potential, overall, this is a straightforward wheated bourbon that will please those seeking a no-nonsense sip.
