Initially established in 1856 in Paris, Kentucky, Chicken Cock was one of the larger bourbon brands of the 19th century before it faded into existence.‍‍The Chicken Cock brand was resurrected by entrepreneur Matti Anttila beginning in 2011, with the first modern-day release being a 30-barrel release of 8-year-old bourbon in 2017. Recently, the brand has undergone a label refresh for its core product portfolio, including the Straight Bourbon in review. 

Since I last visited this bourbon about 4 years ago, there have been a few changes, but the core of the bourbon has remained consistent. While the label has changed, now including full color and more modest gold accenting, the asking price, age, mashbill, distillation source, and proof have all remained the same. 

The flavor profile has remained grounded in similar flavor notes, with some slight differences, mostly characterized by a slight shift into lighter, more easy-drinking territory. On the nose, graham cracker, vanilla, and caramel form a base with an accent of dried apricot – all of which is delivered in a light, approachable form. The palate brings a little more richness but still remains mild, with baking spices, graham cracker, and light oak delivered evenly, complemented by a touch of dried fruit. Baking spices and hints of dried apricot and toasted oak round out the medium-length finish. 

Chicken Cock Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a solid foundation bourbon. It’s an approachable, well-balanced, easy-drinking bourbon that stays within core traditional Kentucky straight bourbon flavor territory. However, the flavor profile lacks distinctive characteristics, instead holding the line on broad appeal. While the bottle does stand out in both name and feel, the bourbon inside is more in line with many $30-$40 competitors. It’s a solid bourbon without any particular faults, but it just doesn’t deliver enough oomph to make it a strong recommendation at its $60 price point.
