Still Austin Bottled in Bond Rye is a well-developed and balanced 4 year old rye, tasting older than its age statement and offering a delightful drinking experience.
In the summer of 2023, Still Austin Whiskey Co. introduced a new, ongoing “Seasonal Bottled in Bond Series” that includes different bottled in bond whiskeys for each of the four seasons of the year. Each release is intended to capture the ingredients, flavors, and themes of its respective season, with labels showcasing artwork by Marc Burckhardt. The animals and colors featured are designed to evoke the mood of the particular season.
This year’s Still Austin Bottled in Bond Rye releases continue the quality level that previous editions offered. Though the bottle features a 4 year age statement, it tastes older. That could be because it features whiskey older than its age statement, or more likely, the Texas climate is enhancing the barrel aging process, which is typical of this geographical region. Regardless of the exact reason, Still Austin Bottled in Bond Rye is a joy to drink. Although it lacks the complexity found in older ryes and its flavors fade quickly, they are distinct, feature good intensity, and are well-balanced overall. While its price is still a touch high, Still Austin Bottled in Bond Rye is really coming into its own as a distinct tasting rye.
