A more intense variation on Purple Toad’s Double Oaked Bourbon that trades richness of flavor for impact.
Purple Toad Winery & Distillery is a family-owned and operated company located in Paducah, Kentucky, approximately 200 miles west of Bardstown, Kentucky. The company opened their doors in 2009, initially only selling wine from grapes grown on their vineyard. Only recently did they build an on-site still, unveiling their first clear spirits in December 2024. Double Oaked Kentucky Whiskey (118 Proof) is the higher proof version of Double Oaked Kentucky Whiskey (94 Proof), both of which were made from sourced, hand-selected barrels, made from the same mashbill, and aged for a total of 11 years. The bottles are only distinguished by their proof and are available at Purple Toad’s tasting room and a limited number of Kentucky retailers.
The whiskey kicks things off with cinnamon, brown sugar, caramel, and toasted oak on the nose. The scents are encapsulated in ethanol, which is enough to be distracting. On the palate, sugarcane, black pepper, and allspice meet tannic oak. Black pepper, rye spice, and tobacco leaf round out the finish.
This is an unusual case where the lower proof version exceeds the higher proof one, due to offering a richer flavor with less intruding ethanol. Notwithstanding this, the 118 proof version will satisfy proof-seekers, as it is still more intense overall.
The bottle in review is from batch 1.
