The oldest release from Old Dominick to date, 8 Year Reserve Bourbon is a rich, layered bourbon.

Old Dominick was originally established in 1866 by Domenico Canale in Memphis, Tennessee. In May 2017, fifth-generation grandsons of Canale, Chris and Alex, revived the brand and opened the Old Dominick Distillery in downtown Memphis, with the help of Master Distiller Alex Castle.

8 Year Reserve Bourbon is a limited edition milestone release for Old Dominick. It is the distillery’s oldest in-house distilled whiskey release to date, using carefully selected barrels that were originally filled when the distillery opened in 2017. Distillate was made using the same mashbill and was passed through the same quick maple charcoal filtration as the distillery’s Tennessee Whiskey; however, Old Dominick chose to label the product straight bourbon, rather than a Tennessee Whiskey (either classification is allowable by law).

The bourbon has a lot going on. Seasoned aged oak, black cherry, vanilla custard, caramel, and cinnamon define the whiskey’s full, inviting introduction. Dark chocolate, honey, and graham cracker are accented by splashes of baking spices and allspice along with a dab of caramel on the backend of the palate - all of which are delivered with a rich intensity. Baking spices, caramel, and crème brûlée prop up the finish, with milk chocolate and rye spice leading to a lasting sweet-spicy mix on the tail end.

I’ve tasted quite a few Old Dominick whiskeys as well as their sourced brand, Huling Station, and while they have all been good, 8 Year Reserve Bourbon is in a league of its own. This carefully curated whiskey confirms the distillery is capable of delivering excellence, and I strongly recommend seeking out a bottle before they are gone. If the company can instill this level of quality in every whiskey they produce, they’ll be a force to be reckoned with.
