The Frey Ranch Harvester Series: Second Harvest is a complex, unique American whiskey, blended from five different grain whiskeys, offering an intriguing and flavorful experience for dedicated Frey Ranch fans.
Following the inaugural release of their Harvester Series in June 2025, which coincided with the company’s 10th Anniversary, Frey Ranch is back for round two. Dubbed the "Second Harvest," it coincides with the distillery's yearly “Whiskey Harvest,” the period between August and October when the company harvests the corn, wheat, barley, rye, and oats that are used to make all Frey Ranch whiskeys. This limited release of 600 bottles consists of owners Colby and Ashley Frey, Master Blender Nancy Fraley, and Master Distiller Russell Wedlake’s favorite single barrels.
For this release, just over half of the blend consists of 100% wheat whiskey, followed by 14.25% four-grain bourbon, and a mix of malted and unmalted barley whiskeys rounding it out. Given how unique and at times grain-focused Frey Ranch whiskeys are, Second Harvest Whiskey makes for an increasingly interesting pour with each sip.
It starts with an aroma that layers in chocolate, marshmallow, whipped cream, mint, toasted coconut, dates, and sweet oak, to excellent results. The palate induces a bevy of fruit notes thanks to fruit cake, blackberry, and orange. Seasoned oak is introduced before finishing with spicy, charred oak, leather, fig, and orange chocolate. It’s this wide range of flavors and how they interact with each other that makes Second Harvest work as well as it does.
Second Harvest Whiskey is certainly a unique pour with a big price tag to boot. Given its limited nature and price, it’s definitely for the diehard Frey Ranch fans. For the rest of us, it provides a snapshot of what might be coming down the line from the distillery. Frey Ranch seems to be rapidly expanding its output beyond their standard offerings, and it’s having a beneficial impact on the variety of whiskeys they are putting out.
