With more depth than its age suggests, Five & 20 SB(RW) Rye is an interesting rye from the Western New York distillery.
Located almost as far west as you can travel in New York state, about 45 miles southwest of Buffalo and only minutes from the southern shores of Lake Erie, Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing claims the title as New York’s first combination distillery, brewery, and winery.
For being only aged for 2 years, Five & 20 SB(RW) Rye pulls out a surprising number of flavors. It starts with a youthful nose that highlights cereal grain, fresh oak, and a surprising yet pleasing Nesquik powder scent. A milk chocolate note carries over to the midpoint and is joined by more classic rye notes along with faint lemon rind and grain notes. The finish highlights rye spice and chewy malt before transitioning to a lingering dry leather and spice finish.
Five & 20 SB(RW) Rye utilizes every day it rested in the barrels to deliver a sip that shows a lot of potential. While youthful and grainy notes can be found in the nose midpoint, they’re never enough to detract from the overall enjoyment. As is, the sip provides enough structure to imagine a really solid rye if it had double or triple the time to rest in the barrels. For now, this will appeal to those who live near the distillery or want to explore more craft ryes from the western side of New York State.
