A no-nonsense rye from the Finger Lakes region of New York State, McKenzie Rye Whiskey will appeal to those looking for a craft rye that’s filled with spice and supporting sweet notes.
Finger Lakes Distilling is located on the southeast side of Seneca Lake in New York’s Finger Lakes wine region. The brainchild of Brian McKenzie, the company was one of the earliest craft whiskey distilleries in New York, having started operations in 2007. Finger Lakes Distilling uses locally sourced grains for their products, and produces a variety of different whiskeys and liqueurs, with the McKenzie whiskey brand being what they’re best known for.
McKenzie Rye Whiskey is a straightforward whiskey that gets right to the point. It starts with a nice nose of Baker’s Chocolate, grain, oak, and dried orange and cherry, which butt up against a touch of ethanol. The midpoint focuses on rye spice with dark chocolate, oak, and vanilla cream, adding contrast. Finishing with a focus on various spices, a dab of light buttermilk frosting makes an appearance before a light lingering spice takes over. While it's young (a surprise given how long the company has been in business), the whiskey delivers a nice sip but leaves drinkers curious about what doubling or even tripling the age at this proof would taste like.
