Capitalizing on Old Elk’s custom 96% wheat, 4% malted barley mashbill, contract-distilled by Greg Metze at MGP, this 103 proof wheat whiskey makes a splash with a rich flavor profile and accessible price point.
Acquired by Middle West Spirits out of Ohio in 2025, Old Elk is making a splash with the release of their 10 Year Collection, which featured a straight bourbon, straight wheated bourbon, and this straight wheat whiskey. Aged for 10 years, this release comes from the days when Greg Metze contract-distilled Old Elk’s custom mashbills at MGP. Wheat whiskeys remain an American whiskey niche, and Old Elk has been a pioneer on that front, releasing wheat whiskeys periodically at various ages and proofs, wheat whiskey single barrels, and wheat whiskey heavy blends.
The latest edition follows the path Old Elk has laid out for its ever-evolving wheat whiskey line. It’s the second 10 year old released after their 2023 release, though it is not the same whiskey, as that release had a 95% wheat, 5% malted barley mashbill and was bottled at a higher 110 proof.
What remains constant across Old Elk’s wheated whiskeys is the overall richness that permeates the sip. Warm cinnamon bun, Christmas spices, brown sugar, honey, and pie crust on the nose give way to sweet pretzel dough, stewed apple, dark cherry, and sugar-coated raisin at the midpoint. Christmas spices, persistent brown sugar, graham cracker, and toasted oak wrap things up. The overall sip has a slight astringency, as many wheat whiskeys do, and while it has plenty of flavor, it’s not overly complex; the flavors are fairly front and center. However, it’s the richness and that warm, sweet undertone that permeates through, making it a really tasty, full-flavored sip.
What is also notable is the whiskey’s price point, set at only $70. This is clearly an indicator of Middle West Spirits making a splash with the brand, as the set of decade-old releases for $70 and relatively accessible is on par with the value play Heaven Hill offers for their Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon lineup. For fans of wheat whiskey, Old Elk 10 Year Wheat Whiskey is an easy buy recommendation.
