The first-ever HAZMAT rye release from Lost Lantern, 2026 Single Cask #7: Broad Branch Distillery North Carolina Rye is a bold affair in every facet of its sip.
Lost Lantern’s Spring 2026 Collection explores the difference between high proof and low proof whiskeys, showcasing both the intensity of cask strength whiskeys and the balance and approachability of lower proof ones. The collection includes the new Far-Flung Bourbon 100 Proof alongside a stronger cask strength version, plus eight single casks paired by proof from distilleries across the U.S - some of which have never been featured by Lost Lantern before.
Lost Lantern 2026 Single Cask #7 is part of the company’s High-Low Rye Pairing and the first-ever HAZMAT rye released by the company. With a proof of 141.6, it serves as the higher proof bottle of the pairing, with the other, Lost Lantern 2026 Single Cask #8: New Riff Distilling Kentucky Rye, coming in at 115.1 proof. The company states that “This rye pairing from the Upland South demonstrates how proof shapes spice, texture, and aromatic complexity.”
HAZMAT whiskeys can be a bold endeavor, and this example from Broad Branch Distillery fits the bill to a tee. It starts off with bright scents of spiced apple, baking spices, butterscotch, and wheat grass. Its intensity skyrockets at its midpoint as you are inundated with notes of various spices, spiced apple pie, and sweet flavors of butter scotch sauce and faint chocolate. The finish envelopes your mouth with oak, faint spiced applesauce, and bold spices that linger.
The first HAZMAT rye release by Lost Lantern will certainly cater to those who think the higher the proof of a whiskey, the better it is. It’s bold, hot, and full of flavor. Those same traits, however, hold it back from taking its flavor profile to the next level. While its proof cranks up the boldness of the flavors, it also cranks up the heat and spice to an almost overbearing level. Those who like a bold spicy 100% rye will want to seek this out; however, this whiskey is not for the faint of heart.
Lost Lantern 2026 Single Cask #1: Montgomery Distillery Montana Bourbon is a 174 bottle release.
