Lost Lantern Summer 2025 Single Cask #6: Frey Ranch Estate-Grown Nevada Straight Bourbon offers a robust and flavorful experience that truly showcases the capabilities of Frey Ranch.
Lost Lantern’s Summer 2025 Collection “celebrates the rise of estate distilleries.” These types of distilleries grow all of their own grain either onsite or within a short distance to their distilling facilities. This helps give rise to the “grain to glass” movement within the whiskey industry and, like wine, seeks to highlight terroir, or a "sense of place" that the whiskey embodies.
Frey Ranch Distillery is featured prominently in Lost Lantern’s Summer 2025 Collection and features single barrel bourbon, rye, and wheat whiskeys as well as serving as a component in both the bourbon and rye small batch blends. Frey Ranch is located in northern Nevada, on a 5th-generation, 165 year old, 1,500-acre family farm, and is celebrating its 10th year distilling.
As with any distillery that begins making their own whiskey, it can go through many changes as their distilling process develops. Having tasted Frey Ranch’s whiskey over the years, this is the case, and it is perhaps even more noticeable because their whiskeys are generally more grain-focused. Where some see it as a deterrent, others view it as showcasing the heritage of the whiskey, the land it was grown on, and the distillery that produces it.
Simply put, Lost Lantern 2025 Single Cask #6 is one of the best bourbons I’ve tasted from Frey Ranch yet. It begins with a robust aroma that combines pomegranate and blood orange with notes of caramel, seasoned oak, and cinnamon. The palate is equally strong, with notes of cocoa powder and molasses that form an almost brownie-like flavor combination. Add in a sweet-but-not-too-sweet cinnamon slurry and roasted cherry, and it tastes as good as it sounds. Finally, the sip ends with a finish focused on notes of plum, additional molasses with brown sugar, charred oak, and a hint of black pepper.
Lost Lantern 2025 Single Cask #6 offers a wealth of flavor at a remarkably approachable proof point. This bourbon works so well because of the range of flavors it offers, and those flavors manage to come together without trampling over each other. Frey Ranch hit the scene with a unique tasting bourbon that showcases their terroir, and after 10 years, it has developed into something special.
Lost Lantern Frey Ranch Estate-Grown Nevada Straight Bourbon is a 200 bottle release.
