Lost Lantern's 2025 Single Cask #11: Frey Ranch Estate-Grown Nevada Wheat Whiskey is a unique and flavorful wheat whiskey crafted with a 100% wheat mashbill, offering a more nuanced experience than expected from its high proof.
Lost Lantern’s Summer 2025 Collection “celebrates the rise of estate distilleries.” These types of distilleries grow all of their own grain either onsite or within a short distance to their distilling facilities. This helps give rise to the “grain to glass” movement within the whiskey industry and, like wine, seeks to highlight terroir, or a "sense of place" that the whiskey embodies.
Frey Ranch Distillery is featured prominently in Lost Lantern’s Summer 2025 Collection and features single barrel bourbon, rye, and wheat whiskeys as well as serving as a component in both the bourbon and rye small batch blends. Frey Ranch is located in northern Nevada, on a 5th-generation, 165 year old, 1,500-acre family farm, and the distillery is celebrating its 10th year of distilling.
As an estate distillery, grain plays a significant role in the creation and taste of their whiskey. Owners Ashley and Colby Frey create whiskeys that are often grain-forward by design. Lost Lantern 2025 Single Cask #11 features the company’s white label, signifying that it breaks the traditional mold as it is neither a bourbon (red label) or rye (green label). In this case, the whiskey features a 100% wheat mashbill, and outside of a few small distilleries, very few make wheat whiskey with this amount of wheat.
From the outset, this wheat whiskey comes together beautifully. The aroma is filled with strong caramel, raspberry soufflé, spicy charred oak, and seared mint, with a light floral essence to it. The palate hits with robust strawberry, seasoned oak, and layers of baking spices. The finish offers a delicious blend of raspberry mousse, rich dark chocolate, and charred oak.
Given that this is a wheat whiskey and high proof, many may expect another Bernheim Barrel Proof Original Wheat Whiskey or Heaven Hill Heritage Collection: 19 Year Old Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey (2025) killer. Surprisingly, this is a very different beast, and that in part is due to its 100% wheat mashbill, which isn’t used often in wheat whiskeys. Its proof is strikingly pulled back and allows the flavors to gently envelope your mouth. The result is a wheat whiskey that is full-flavored, unique-tasting, and an all-around standout in Lost Lantern’s Summer 2025 Collection. Lost Lantern's 2025 Single Cask #11 truly showcases what wheat whiskey can offer.
Lost Lantern Frey Ranch Estate-Grown Nevada Straight Wheat Whiskey is a 233 bottle release.
