Jack Daniel’s has chosen a slow rollout for its American single malt product. They revealed it in 2022 with the release of their limited edition Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled Special Release American Single Malt. They followed up a year later with Jack Daniel’s American Single Malt Oloroso Sherry Cask, but relegated it to travel-retail exclusivity. This partly had to do with limited supply and potential fine-tuning as I’m sure they also hoped its limited nature would build mystique and slow-growing demand. But American single malts have remained a relatively small segment of American whiskey and have yet to see the rabid interest some producers have been hoping for.

Three years later, Jack Daniel’s is turning their Jack Daniel’s American Single Malt into a national limited edition release. The bottle’s proof and 1L size remain the same, but the price dropped by $25. It also continues to undergo the company’s traditional 10 foot charcoal mellowing process and is once again finished in oloroso sherry casks.

Overall, the whiskey’s flavor profile remains largely unchanged, except in a few minor areas. Its malt backbone tastes slightly pulled back, letting the fruitiness of the oloroso sherry cask finish come through more strongly. That’s largely a benefit, except that the finish leaves a dry, slightly bitter, wine-influenced aftertaste. Overall, the flavor profile is very fruit-forward. Its 90 proof point lets it come through with good intensity, featuring juicy grape and stewed red berries on the nose, black cherry, strawberry, rhubarb, and its punchy but balanced sweet-tart taste influences the palate, followed by a coffee and raisin finish.

Though it may feel like baby steps (as with whiskey aging, everything is slow going), Jack Daniel’s American Single Malt Oloroso Sherry Cask is moving in a positive direction. Its flavors show nice distinction and gentle refinement, with an intensity that works well for its proof. Its finish still needs a little more refinement, but overall, Jack Daniel’s American Single Malt is slowly coming into its own in Jack Daniel’s brand portfolio.
