Hard Truth Distilling Barrel Finish Reserve puts French Oak front and center - rich, sweet, and unmistakably French oak finished.
French Oak is Hard Truth Distilling Co.’s first Barrel Finish Reserve release of 2026. Distilled in-house at their Indiana distillery using sweet mash, this finished bourbon combines 23 barrels of bourbon distilled from two different mashbills and then finished in toasted French oak casks.
Offering a tighter grain structure and higher tanning content than American oak, French oak often brings flavors of dried fruit, tobacco, and dark spices to bourbon. For Hard Truth Barrel Finish Reserve: French Oak, the result is a concentrated dessert-like sweetness with apricot, brown sugar, and toasted marshmallow flavors doing the heavy lifting.
The aroma has some heat, but sweet flavors of honey, burnt caramel, and apricot overpower it, with accents of pie crust and seasoned oak. Waves of sweet flavors arrive on the palate, with toasted marshmallow, caramelized brown sugar, and toasted oak up front. A concentrated dried-apricot sweetness lingers in the background, feeling as if it carried over from the aroma into the sip. A slight hint of baking spices appears in the finish, with brown sugar and gingerbread flavors bubbling back up as the sweetness recedes.
Hard Truth Distilling Co. has proven its ability to put together one solid release after another, highlighting their sweet mash and showing range among bourbons, ryes, various malted grains, and finishes. Barrel Finish Reserve: French Oak dials in French oak finishing really well, with a whiskey that goes all-in on the flavors French oak is known for, delivering rich, satisfying results.
