Focusing on kitchen baking flavors, Frank August Case Study: 05 leans into its wheated underpinnings and delivers a pleasing sip at a high cost.
Frank August is spearheaded by CEO and Co-Founder, Johnathan Crocker, the former denim and fashion executive for AG Jeans and BLDWN. Frank August’s concept isn’t an elaborate backstory, instead allowing the bourbon (and bottle) to speak for itself. The minimalist and contemporary-designed bottle is a feature, not a bug, meant to subtly stand out while letting the whiskey, not its packaging, do all the talking. For their latest case study, the brand created eight batches by blending sets of five barrels of Kentucky wheated bourbon that were aged 6-7 years.
The whiskey embraces its wheat name, showcasing softer flavors throughout. The sip opens with baking scents, highlighting fresh dough, cinnamon crumble, and faint grain. Lighter notes form the midpoint, with brown sugar butter, faint cherry, and a chewy berry turnover forming the backbone of the midpoint. The finish is short, with light spice and oak colliding with a quick burst of heat. Overall, wheated bourbon fans will enjoy this pour; however, its price tag is on the higher side for the sip it delivers.
The bourbon in review is batch number 3, bottle number 890 out of 9321.
