The company sourced barrels that held American single malt in used oak IPA beer barrels from Iowa and transferred them to Kentucky to continue aging before bottling. For this particular release, the company states that “The Malted Mummy chronicles the saga of Raiya, an Egyptian beauty who is left slain in the grain by a jealous Queen. Thousands of years later her spirit is reanimated by a pour of whiskey and she roams the Midwest desperate to quench her thirst, regain her beauty and recapture a lost love.”

The Malted Mummy opens with a gentle pop of sweetness, which can most likely be attributed to the time it spent being finished in a used IPA beer barrel. Graham cracker, light honeycomb, and a noticeable toasted malt scent waft out to create a very pleasing opening. These flow through to the palate in various forms along with a gentle white peppercorn note. The finish is where the sip starts to unravel, as white peppercorn spice, nutmeg, and light chew oak make an appearance, but exit just as soon as they arrive. Overall, The Malted Mummy is a nice introduction to those looking to sample American single malts. The whiskey’s low proof combined with its premium price point will leave experienced American single malt lovers, or those who just enjoy a bolder pour, expecting a bit more.
