Filmland Spirits Moonlight Mayhem! 2 is a flavor-packed, white port finished bourbon notable for its pronounced white grape note and its other well-integrated flavors.
Port finished bourbons have been one of the more common finished whiskeys over the years, but they typically use either ruby (young and fruity) or tawny (aged in wooden barrels) as their finishing barrel type of choice. A few companies have used white port recently to great effect, so the question is becoming, “Is white port the superior port finishing barrel of choice?”
Sweet oak sets the aroma, but a sweet and semi-earthy scent of strawberry rhubarb pie adds considerable depth. White grape dominates the palate for good reason. In other whiskeys that might lightly offer this flavor note, it is instead much more pronounced here. The white grape combines with raisin, mixed nuts, brown sugar, and a light malty note, delivering a palate that comes together exceedingly well. The finish is a shade darker in flavor, with notes of plum, black cherry, and dates rounding it out. Charred oak comes into play at this point, adding a slight touch of smoke.
Filmland Spirits Moonlight Mayhem! 2: The White Port Wolf is another example of white port demonstrating its effectiveness as a finishing style. With Chattanooga Whiskey White Port Cask Finish featuring a high-malt Tennessee whiskey, 15 Stars Three Ports Fine-Aged Bourbon featuring high-aged Kentucky bourbon, and Filmland Spirits Moonlight Mayhem! 2: The White Port Wolf featuring Indiana bourbon, it goes to show that white port plays nicely with whoever invites it over to play. White grape is the star, and not enough bourbons incorporate that particular flavor note in their profiles. Although only 94 proof, the whiskey packs a lot of flavor, and combined with its price, this is one bottle that is worth having a backup of.
