Basil Hayden Cognac Cask Reserve is a limited edition bourbon that retains the brand's high rye mashbill and is finished in barrels that previously held Cognac for 20-25 years. The brand has been relatively quiet over the past few years, following the release of Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke in 2022 and Basil Hayden Malted Rye in 2023, which was recently renamed Basil Hayden Golden Rye in 2026.

Cognac is a popular finishing style because it pairs so well with bourbon. It doesn’t matter if the bourbon is spicy or sweet; Cognac finishing typically adds a good deal of sweet grape to the end product, making for a very appealing and approachable sip.

Given that Basil Hayden bourbons are released at 80 proof, you’d expect the flavors to be so light that you’d barely notice them. Surprisingly, that’s only partly true with this release. Sweetness dominates every part of Basil Hayden Cognac Cask Reserve Bourbon for better or for worse. At times, it can come off more like a kid’s grape juice drink, made for adults because of how sweet it is. Yet the whiskey’s finish has just enough cinnamon spice and a mild proof pop to remind you what you’re actually drinking.

Though this was aged in barrels that held Cognac for 20-25 years, you’ll have a hard time specifically picking that distinction out. Instead, as with all Basil Hayden releases, the sip is incredibly approachable and easy to drink. Despite its 80 proof point, it tastes more flavorful than the standard Basil Hayden Bourbon, though you better like grape before diving in. While there’s no shortage of Cognac-finished bourbons on the market, the real reason for this is that they work and they’re hard to get wrong. Though Basil Hayden Cognac Cask Reserve’s base bourbon takes a backseat to its Cognac finishing, that's kind of the point. It wears its Cognac finishing on its sleeve, and though it may come across as watery, one-note, and overly sweet to more experienced bourbon drinkers, it drinks like an approachable pre-mixed cocktail in many ways. When viewed that way, it will likely be welcomed at any gathering of whiskey drinkers.
