Delicate with a lingering finish, Walleye Run Whiskey Single Malt Whiskey will appeal to those looking for a more classic American single malt.
Walleye Run is a lesser known whiskey brand from New Holland Spirits, the Michigan-based company known more for Dragon’s Milk beer and bourbon. The Walleye Run Whiskey portfolio currently consists of three core bottles: Malted Rye Whiskey (aged 7 years), Wheat Whiskey (aged 8 years), and Single Malt Whiskey (aged 10 years). Each is distilled using the company’s 100 year old Prohibition-era copper pot still, and according to the company, everything they plan to release under the Walleye Run label will be aged at least 7 years. New Holland Distilling Co. has been one of the earlier American single malt distillers, having been around with their Zeppelin line of whiskeys since 2007.
Walleye Run Whiskey Single Malt Whiskey can best be summed up in one word: Delicate. The sip is flavorful but never in your face, instead forcing you to sit with it as the flavor notes reveal themselves. An interesting aroma of roasted malt, brown sugar, and green grapes kicks things off. The midpoint is straightforward and focuses on four core flavor expressions, with each one being of equal weight. The finish is where the whiskey really comes alive, with a slightly chewy, lingering ending that blends baking spices, oak, and light roasted malt nicely. It’s expensive for the sip delivered, however those looking for a more traditional tasting American single malt whiskey will be right at home.
