Silverthorn Reserve 10 Year Blender’s Art Rye Blend stands out in an increasingly crowded high aged rye market, offering nuanced fruit, seasoned oak, and candied cherry flavors at a more than fair price.
Founded by Drew Thorn following his decade-long tenure building Sagamore Spirit and serving as its CEO, Silverthorn Reserve operates as an independent whiskey brand out of Baltimore.
Debuting in 2026, the operation intentionally avoids high-volume consistency, opting instead for a small-scale focus on hand-picked casks, specialized finishing, and boutique blending. Thorn remains hands-on with “sensory analysis,” barrel selection, batching, proofing, and bottling, using production support through collaborations with Old Line Spirits and Sagamore Spirit. The producer places a heavy premium on transparency, openly detailing every release's origin state, mashbill, age components, and blend proportions. Its inaugural portfolio features aged bourbon, blended ryes, single barrels, and finished expressions.
It seems like every few weeks someone releases another 10 year old rye - partially one from Indiana – but is that a bad thing? In Silverthorn Reserve’s case, because they create batches of just 2-10 barrels, a lot of nuance comes through that lets it stand out. With Batch 1 including 12% 13 year old rye, it especially comes through in the finish, which features dried apricot, aged seasoned oak, and fruit cake. That's not to say the rye isn’t also bright and lively either. The palate in particular features a lovely candied cherry note that is one of the most memorable parts about its sip.
Rye lovers continue to be spoiled by high aged ryes hitting the market lately. Silverthorn Reserve 10 Year Blender’s Art Rye Blend enters that conversation immediately. Priced at $100, it is a touch higher than Bulleit, Templeton, or Remus, but also not out of line for today’s market. A few short years ago, $100 for a 10+ year old rye would have been unheard of. As such, it's a fair price for an excellent-tasting rye and starts Silverthorn off on strong footing in the category.
The rye in review is bottle number 129 out of 1,400.
