Shining a light on a small Nantucket Island distillery, Lost Lantern 2025 Single Cask #18 lives up to its promise of being part of the “Scotch Lover’s Collection.”
Based on Nantucket Island, Triple Eight Distillery is a pioneer in American single malts. Founded in 2000, they are one of the country’s oldest dedicated single malt whiskey programs.
The distillery takes its name from its original water source, well #888, whose clean island aquifer helped inspire these artisanal distillers long before craft spirits became a national movement. What began as a project with the island’s Cisco Brewers and Nantucket Vineyard soon evolved into a working distillery with a grain-to-glass philosophy and island-driven inspiration. The company currently produces vodka, gin, and rum, and due to its early commitment to American single malts, it continually releases some of the oldest American single malts in the country. This release is part of Lost Lantern’s trio of the first Triple Eight single casks ever released.
Triple Eight Massachusetts Single Malt 10 Years is part of Lost Lantern’s Fall 2025 Collection, which they refer to as the “Scotch Lover’s Collection,” as it takes a “deep dive into the more traditional side of American single malt.” Having aged for a full 10 years in a used bourbon barrel, you’ll initially notice the lighter color the whiskey showcases. That’s your first sign that this whiskey lives up to its billing as a Scotch lover's whiskey.
It opens with an earthy aroma that evokes salty ocean mist and salt water taffy, along with more traditional, light, sweet scents. The midpoint combines various spice notes with oak and an intriguing blend of cinnamon baked pear, and honey, which adds balancing sweetness. The spice continues into the finish and combines with light, sweet notes of spiced honey, caramel, and chocolate. Overall, it’s an intriguing American single malt; however, I walked away feeling it’s trying too hard to emulate a scotch and lacks the differentiation that makes American single malts so great. That said, scotch lovers who are looking to make the leap to American single malts couldn’t ask for an easier whiskey to transition them and will appreciate what this whiskey offers.
Lost Lantern Triple Eight Massachusetts Single Malt 10 Years is a 174 bottle release.
