This full proof version successfully amplifies the flavors of the standard Green River Wheated Bourbon, adding much-needed intensity and weight to the overall sip.
Green River continues to follow the playbook they used to roll out their Green River Bourbon for their Wheated Bourbon: start with a standard release, followed by a single barrel, and cap it off with a full proof version. Similar to what drinkers experienced jumping in proof from the standard 90 proof to near 120 proof with other products, Green River Wheated Full Proof Bourbon takes many of the flavors found in the standard wheated release and amplifies them in all the right ways. Though Green River bourbons are enjoyable at a lower proof, their high proof versions tend to show off the best qualities the bourbons have to offer.
The 90 proof Green River Wheated Bourbon leaves less of a memorable impression than their standard 90 proof bourbon. The inclusion of wheat tends to tame the overall impact, while the absence of spice has a dramatic impact on its overall flavor profile. The bump in proof for the Wheated Full Proof release definitely helps add some much needed excitement to its sip and is a better pour for it.
The aroma is overall much more interesting with layers of cherry, whipped cream, orange jelly slice candy, fruit salad, vanilla cream puff, and fresh baked bread. The palate is quite fruity, dishing up dried apricot, orange slice, fresh cantaloupe, and cherry cobbler. The finish is noticeably lighter and drops quickly, but offers aged leather, light cinnamon, baked bread, a touch of spicy oak, and wheat grain.
Jumping in proof isn’t a transformative experience for Green River Wheated Bourbon’s sip, but it is an improvement. Where the standard lower proof version was much too gentle for its own good, the Full Proof version is a much better all around sip, adding weight and intensity where it is needed. Though it lacks the uniqueness of other high proof wheated bourbons like Larceny Barrel Proof Bourbon batches do, its reasonable $50 price point is a fair tradeoff.
