Black Frost Blended Bourbon is an estate distillery produced spirit that is in line with other craft whiskeys with a similar age.
Black Frost Distilling was co-founded in 2022 by Nate Gieseke and Jace Marti, a 6th generation farmer and a 6th generation brewmaster, respectively. The company is located in New Ulm, Minnesota, and focuses on terroir, which is a French term used to describe the environmental factors that impact a crop, including farming practices, soil, climate, and a crop's specific growth habitat, to name a few. The company uses grains grown on Gieseke’s farm and ages their whiskeys exclusively in Minnesota-grown oak barrels.
The first thing you’ll notice is the dark color of the whiskey, considering its age. However, whatever initial impression you may have formed about how it may taste quickly changes the moment you smell the whiskey. More familiar scents of youthfulness come to mind as fresh grain, sweet corn, and oak mingle with wintermint and a faint oak scent. Cereal grain and sweet vanilla blend with light spice and provide for an overall thin mouthfeel at the midpoint before moving on to a short and light finish. In the end, Black Frost Blended Bourbon is a typical young craft whiskey, meaning it shows potential with the flavors present, but still has a while to go before it hits its stride.
The bottle in review comes from Lot Number 0225.
