In the spirit of innovation and to allow customers to explore new taste visions, Maker’s Mark® is evolving the Maker's Mark® Private Selection Program for the first time since its launch in 2015, by introducing a new stave, Roasted French Mendiant. The stave was carefully selected, working with our longtime cooperage, Independent Stave Company, to find the right mix of wood type, cut, and cook style that would deliver the flavors we were seeking. This new stave, alongside Maker’s 46™, Baked American Pure 2, Seared French Cuvee and Toasted French Spice, offers new combinations of taste profiles for our valued customers to explore as they develop their very own custom whisky.
The Roasted French Mendiant stave is named after a traditional French confection featuring chocolate, dried fruit and nuts. The new stave takes the flavor cues folks have come to know and love from the program’s Mocha stave and expands on them with amplified milk chocolate, buttery nut, deep coffee and dried dark fruit notes.
INTRODUCTION OF MENDIANT & ARCHIVE OF MOCHA
Roasted French Mendiant will be available as a stave option in the Maker’s Mark® Private Selection program beginning February 2021. It will replace the Roasted French Mocha stave as one of five proprietary stave types available to new Maker’s Mark Private Selection customers. However, understanding that Mocha has been a favorite among program participants, we intend to honor the selections that include Mocha in their previous recipes by allowing them to recreate their recipes with the Mocha stave in future barrels.
STAVE CUT & COOK
In introducing Mendiant, we wanted to bring in a new and exciting stave that takes flavor cues from Mocha but enhances even more rich and creamy classic Maker’s Mark® notes. Mendiant, like Mocha, is also a French oak stave with a classic cut but is cooked low and slow vs. high and slow to achieve a delicious new finish.

Maker’s Mark® Private Selection is the only custom barrel program that allows restaurants, bars and retailers to craft their own bourbon and explore their own taste visions of Maker’s Mark®. Offering a new take on the process Bill Samuels Jr. used to create Maker's Mark 46™, Maker’s Mark® Private Selection begins with cask strength Maker's Mark®and is finished in barrels specially fitted with 10 wood-finishing staves for nine additional weeks in our limestone cellar. Where Private Selection separates itself from Maker's Mark 46™is barrel customization using five different stave types: Maker’s 46™, Baked American Pure 2, Seared French Cuvee, Toasted French Spice and now, the newly instated Roasted French Mendiant, which replaces the Roasted French Mocha stave. This results in over 1,001 different possible stave combinations. All expressions of Maker's Mark® Private Selection are bottled at cask strength – which ranges from 107-114 proof.
