For this pick, we partnered with Seelbach’s, which was founded by Blake Riber, also the creator of Bourbonr and the Bourbonr Facebook group. An online-only retailer with a twist, last year we interviewed Riber to discuss how he’s running his shop differently than everyone else. “Unlocking Craft Spirits” he calls it - seeking out up-and-coming craft distilleries and learning about their process and tasting through their products to find hidden gems.

For our latest barrel pick from Barrell Craft Spirits, we started with four private release blends with varying percentages of blends consisting of bourbon ranging from 5 years to 16 years old. We were joined by a panel of Breaking Bourbon Single Barrel Club members to help make the selection - Bryce, Cole, and Robin.

Going into the tasting, no one knew which blend was which - they were simply labeled A, B, C, and D. We narrowed it down to two of the four blends pretty easily, but then the debate started. One of the remaining two was incredibly well rounded and a surprisingly easy sipper. The other a more bombastic spice bomb with more robust characteristics. We could have been happy with either, but in the end we decided the spicier blend offered a more memorable flavor profile, and since this is a unique one-off release we decided that was the way to go.

After the decision, we looked at the underlying blend percentages. It turns out we ended up choosing the barrel with the highest percentage of 16 year old bourbon in it. It’s truly a delightful sipper that offers nice complexity that all can appreciate.

The sticker for this barrel has been one we’ve been thinking about for years. Breaking Bourbon meets Barrell Bourbon in a Breaking Bad parody mashup - “Breaking Barrell.” Only in this case, Walter White’s alter ego is none other than Joe Beatrice, Barrell Craft Spirits’ founder. It was destined from the beginning.

For an added bonus, we'll be having a live video session and tasting with Joe Beatrice and Tripp Stimson to walk us through the blend and other exciting things happening with Barrell Craft Spirits (and Stellum) right now. Watch for more details on that soon. Don't miss it!
