Single Barrel Club pick #36 is a single barrel Widow Jane Bourbon in partnership with De Wine Spot out of Brooklyn, NY. It will be released simultaneously with SBC #37, FEW Bourbon.
Widow Jane Distillery is located in the center of Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood. While Widow Jane does distill in-house, this particular selection was from barrels sourced from MGP. With older MGP barrels seeing increasingly high demand and less availability, we jumped at the chance to select a barrel for the Single Barrel Club.
Of the barrels offered, the flavor range was relatively tight. Each barrel was really good, offering a classic bourbon flavor profile with the right balance of oak. For this pick, it meant sussing out the slight nuances between barrels.
Ultimately, we found one barrel to have a little more character, deeper vein of oak, and slightly more intensity of sweetness. While we generally tend to lean towards a higher proof, the lower but still robust 99 proofpoint actually works really well with this bourbon. Considering its higher age and oak influence, this results in a bourbon that favors elegance over a bombastic explosion of flavor. It’s a more classic aged bourbon experience, and one that should be savored.
For the sticker concept, we were reminded of a topic that came up quite a few years ago around the time when we first started Breaking Bourbon. The idea of a “Bourbon Widow,” which in this sense was the fact that there was a brief time the three of us were spending so much time on everything bourbon our wives sometimes felt as if we had disappeared. Late nights working on the site, travelling, bourbon hunting, and so on. A theme many out there can probably relate to if they’ve ever been bitten by the bourbon bug. Thankfully, we found the right balance. And of course, the concept could apply either way - to anyone in a relationship. But playing off the Widow Jane name the sticker only works one way, so we decided to have a little fun with it, blonde hair and all.
Nose: Aged oak | Musty oak | Leather | Caramel | Pleasant with a poignant display of age against a sweet caramel note
Palate: Seasoned oak | Caramel chews | Raisin | Graham cracker | Leather | Well-rounded with nice oak-sweet balance
Finish: Brown sugar | Ramp up of spice | Clove | Long & warming
A pleasant display of a classic tasting aged bourbon with nicely balanced aged oak and caramel notes.
