Shortbarrell Bourbon is a passion project turned company from friends and founders Adam Dorfman, Clinton Dugan, and Patrick Lemmond. Starting in 2015, the group selected over 350 barrels in the following 5 years, and in 2021 decided to formally launch the Shortbarrel brand. Based out of Norcross, Georgia, the company expanded into Atlanta proper with the purchase of Old Fourth Distillery in 2023. Originally established in 2014, Old Fourth Distillery was Atlanta’s first legal distillery since 1906.

To approach this pick, the team at Shortbarrel dug out three unique barrels from their warehouses. A rye from Jefferson’s, a double oaked re-barreled bourbon blend from MGP, and a 9 year (soon-to-turn-10-year) old bourbon from Barton. We tasted these blind with members of our barrel club who regularly join our monthly Sip & Chills, and talked through them one by one. The unanimous favorite, barrel R5-001, was noted as drinking somewhere in 123-130 proof range (though it turns out the proof was higher), noticeable age with savory oak throughout, and rich delivery of flavors. It was the unanimous choice among the group.

The barrel was laid down on November 13, 2025 and was just approaching the 10 year mark when samples were pulled, so the team at Shortbarrel let it rest a bit longer to hit that double digit age of 10 years for bottling. As it turns out, the yield on barrels from similar barrels tended to be in the 160+/- range, however when it was dumped only 96 bottles worth remained, representing a whopping 64% evaporation loss! A “true shorty” as company co-founder Clinton Dugan described it, it was almost serendipitous as their last single barrel they bottled to close out the year and our inaugural Shortbarrel Bourbon pick.

We’re excited to bring this barrel to the club, and hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Tasting Notes:

Waves of aged leather and cocoa are accented by spicy notes of cracked black pepper and cinnamon on the nose. Dense aged oak, leather, and toasted marshmallow land with intensity on the palate, which has a hefty weight to it along with a deep, savory undertone. Spice ramps up into the long finish, which is capped off by seasoned oak and leather as it trails off. This is a bold, savory bourbon that highlights its aged oak and spice components to satisfying results.
