Breaking Bourbon Award Winning Single Barrel Club picks are selected by Breaking Bourbon, and whenever possible with the help of Patreon supporters. The bottles are made available to Patreon supporters first by pledge tier. If any bottles remain after all supporters have had an opportunity to purchase, they are made available to the public on a first come, first served basis. Nashville Barrel Company was founded in 2018, and sources whiskey from many distilleries. The company bottles a lot of single barrels, and even offers a custom experience where customers can choose from various barrels then have it bottled with a custom label. We like the company’s transparency and recognized from the first time we spoke with them (years ago) that they were just as much fans of whiskey as we are.
For this pick we tasted through 9 barrels ranging in age from 6 to 9 years old and including bourbons and ryes. The company’s “Nashtucky” brand features whiskeys distilled in Kentucky and then bottled in Nashville, typically ranging from 5-12 years old. All good sippers, we tasted the barrels over multiple days, eliminating a few each time.
The barrel we ultimately landed on was a unanimous choice, and it was neither the highest aged barrel nor the highest proof. Instead, we chose it simply because it drinks so well and because it seemed to get better each time we had it, standing out against the other barrels and other bottles we were reviewing at the time. Sourced from Heaven Hill, it doesn’t quite fall into any of Heaven Hill Distillery’s existing brand flavor profiles (Elijah Craig, Henry McKenna, Bottled in Bond, and Evan Williams share the same mashbill), so while you could consider it a barrel proof version of any of those, the flavor doesn’t quite line up despite sharing various traits across the group. It’s a no-nonsense bourbon with a rich, savory flavor profile that exemplifies high proof Kentucky bourbon through and through. For fans of this style, it just hits right.
The bourbon starts with a slurry of scents - cigar box, aged leather, baking spices and a flash of toasted marshmallow propped up by a wave of aged oak on the nose. Sweet notes of caramel, brown sugar, and vanilla custard give way to a rush of baking spices, which carries over into the finish. Dense aged oak, leather, and tobacco join a toasted brown sugar note to cap it off. This is a rich, savory, no-nonsense bourbon that really slaps.
