Breaking Bourbon Award Winning Single Barrel Club picks are selected by Breaking Bourbon, and whenever possible with the help of Patreon supporters. The bottles are made available to Patreon supporters first by pledge tier. If any bottles remain after all supporters have had an opportunity to purchase, they are made available to the public on a first come, first served basis. Each barrel is sponsored by a retailer partner, who sells the bottles directly to end purchasers.

Jos. A. Magnus & Co. is the second iteration of the Magnus brand. Originally started by Joseph A. Magnus in 1892, the company focused on producing whiskey until Prohibition took hold. Afterwards, the brand was revitalized when Joseph Magnus’ great grandson discovered a few unopened bottles bearing the family namesake. Re-established in 2015, the company now focuses on blending and finishing techniques initially employed by Joseph Magnus.
Joseph A. Magnus & Co. is known for pioneering “cigar blend” bourbon. Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend Bourbon was developed by Nancy Fraley, a Master Blender and widely revered whiskey and rum consultant. The finished bourbon was created with the intent of pairing it with a cigar, notably including Armagnac, Sherry, and Cognac finishing - three spirits known to pair well with cigars.
This barrel pick is part of a recent rollout of a small handful of single barrels from the company. The lower entry proof, final proof point, use of Seguin Moreau barrels, and aging on the bottom floor of one of MGP’s brick warehouses resulted in something you might not expect from the source. Given how sourcing from MGP works, producers rarely share (or even know) where the barrels were aged. This rare glimpse into that particular detail and the flavor profile of the resulting bourbon is what drew our attention. It contrasts the more typical MGP bourbon flavor profile, which can be more intense and sometimes even border on harsh. Instead of a high proof flavor blast, it’s an even-tempered, beautifully balanced pour that can best be described as “smooth.” A descriptor we rarely use in reviews, it’s unavoidable here because it’s just simply the best way to describe it. Coupled with a proof just over 100, it also has enough body to satisfy consumers who tend to prefer a higher proof. Those curious about this rarely seen side of MGP will want to add this to their collection.
Additional Details
Barrel: 15217

Cooperage: Seguin Moreau, California
Stave Seasoning: 24 months
Char level: Heavy toast, level 2 char with tight grain
Warehouse: "N", the historic Seagram's brick warehouse near Tanner Creek

The bourbon starts softly, with a light aroma of toasted marshmallow, baking spices, and caramel accented by a waft of dark fruits. Dark cherry and pie crust land softly on the palate, followed by caramel and aged oak. Baking spices, leather, a touch of allspice, and light red fruits round out the sip, which leaves a lingering sweetness. This bourbon is a smooth sipper and beautifully balanced throughout.
