Frey Ranch Distillery is an estate distillery located in northern Nevada. On this 165 year old, 1,500-acre family farm, they grow all of their grains, malt their barley onsite, and the whiskey is both produced and aged on their grounds. The whiskey goes through both a continuous still and pot still, which according to the company, “allows us to produce a large quantity from the continuous still while also being able to consistently take heads, hearts and tails cuts (better quality/control) that a pot still provides.” In 2006, they became the first licensed distillery in Nevada since the advent of Prohibition. First offering just vodka, they distilled their first batch of bourbon in 2015 and released it to market in 2020.

Frey Ranch’s single barrel options for this pick were similar to their four-grain Farm Strength Uncut Bourbon, sharing the same mashbill and general proof range. The whiskey is produced entirely from grains grown onsite, aged about 5-6 years, and then bottled non-chill filtered at cask strength. We tasted five barrels total, with proofs ranging from around 119 to 131.

To add a twist to our typical barrel picks, this one was done with members of our Patreon community. Each month, we host a “Sip & Chill” that eligible members are invited to attend. Everyone jumps on video together, and we talk and sip bourbon. Club members Jon, Michael, and Ryan have sipped and chilled with us on these for as long as we can remember, and each has a wealth of experience with the spirit. And so the 6 of us sampled the Frey Ranch barrels together to make this pick together.

We were ultimately drawn to a barrel that presented itself with a more traditional flavor profile, trading some of the prominent grain-forwardness Frey Ranch bourbons can have for more traditional flavors of caramel, vanilla, and barrel char. That is not to say the barrel isn’t still entirely Frey Ranch with their own unique twist on the spirit, driven by their estate-grown grains, however those flavors are more tempered in the barrel we ultimately chose. Clocking in at a whopping 131.38 proof, it’s a deeply flavorful whiskey that highlights caramel and other barrel-driven flavors more intensely than usual for the distillery, so we nicknamed it “Club Barramel.”

Tasting Notes:

Deep caramel, barrel char, and a bright candied pear note introduce a rich, full aroma that’s further accented by hints of toffee and chocolate mocha. On the palate, heavy caramel gives way to graham cracker, barrel char, and dark cherry. Waves of dense seasoned oak and prickly rye spice follow as the whiskey transitions to a long, full-flavored finish that’s capped off with caramel cream candy and tapering rye spice. The bourbon delivers an intensely flavorful sip throughout, with ample caramel and barrel-driven undertones.

About Seelbach’s

For this pick, we partnered with spirits retailer Seelbach’s, which was founded by Blake Riber, also the creator of Bourbonr and the Bourbonr Facebook group. An online-only retailer with a twist, we interviewed Riber to discuss how he’s running his shop differently than everyone else. “Unlocking Craft Spirits” he calls it - seeking out up-and-coming craft distilleries and learning about their process and tasting through their products to find hidden gems.
