Old Elk Bourbon Community Roundtable “Epic” Pick Series

Breaking Bourbon Award Winning Single Barrel Club picks are selected by Breaking Bourbon, and whenever possible with the help of Patreon supporters. The bottles are made available to Patreon supporters first by pledge tier. If any bottles remain after all supporters have had an opportunity to purchase, they are made available to the public on a first come, first served basis. Each barrel is sponsored by a retailer partner, who sells the bottles directly to end purchasers.

Earlier this year we made an epic visit to Old Elk Distillery with the Bourbon Community Roundtable - Jordan and Nick, Kenny and Ryan from Bourbon Pursuit, and Blake from Seelbach’s, which we documented here.

This was a unique experience with essentially unlimited access to Old Elk's barrel supply and master distiller Greg Metze tasting and answering questions as we went. The process took the better part of one day, and then the morning of the next. While they were distilled at MGP, they were distilled by Greg Metze at MGP, for Old Elk...a somewhat unique MGP selection by that measure.

Four of the barrels we selected will start rolling out Tuesday, August 23 to all the groups.

Watch for a post within Patreon titled "URGENT" on the applicable day and time for your tier per the rollout schedule above. The post will contain a link and password to a secure page with instructions on how to buy from our retailer partner.

Old Elk Straight Bourbon
Distillery: MGP
Proof: 109
Age: 5 Years
Mashbill: 51% Corn, 34% Malted Barley, 15% Rye
Bottle Count: 198 bottles

Tasting Notes: Big league chew. The nose is fruity and sweet. It's a really interesting note of watermelon or cantaloupe. It's backed up by a little dark brown sugar and rose water. The palate carries over a little  bit of the melon note. It quickly dries up with toasted graham cracker and white pepper. The finish is long. It's juicy fruit gum and cinnamon.

Old Elk Straight Rye
Distillery: MGP
Proof: 125.4
Age: 7 Years, 6 Months
Mashbill: 95/5 Rye/Malted Barley
Bottle Count: 156 bottles

Tasting Notes: Golden raisin, brown sugar and a little oak. The palate is syrupy with notes of star anise and cloves. There is a subtle herbal note but not minty. It has a smoked meatiness to it not found in many rye whiskeys. It drinks way under its 125 proof. The finish is nice but the palate is the star of the show.

Old Elk Wheated Bourbon
Distillery: MGP
Age: 6 Years, 8 Months
Mashbill: 51% Corn, 45% Wheat, 4% Malted Barley
Proof: 112.2
Bottle Count: 210 bottles

Tasting Notes: Toasted coconut and creamy vanilla. Is Chick-fil-A ice cream too crazy? The palate hits a nice bit of clove and pepper on the back. The finish moves from sweet to green tea as it lingers.

Old Elk Wheat Whiskey
Distillery: MGP
Proof: 113.2
Age: 6 Years, 6 Months
Mashbill: 95% Wheat, 5% Malted Barley
Bottle Count: 205 bottles

Tasting Notes: Brown sugar and apple streusel. Rounded, dark, and easy to sip. A little bit of dried cherries and charred peaches. It quickly moves back to the toasted oak and vanilla from the palate. The finish is medium with a bit of sweet oak and spice.
