Full of rich stout and chocolate notes, Old Potrero California Cellar Series #04 Almanac Beer Co. Imperial Stout Oak Finish showcases how important the choice of stout barrels is when it comes to beer barrel finished bourbons.
Old Potrero California Cellar Series is a nod to the shared heritage of whiskey and wine in the state of California. Head Distiller Kevin Aslan states, “Old Potrero California Cellar Series is an exciting opportunity to highlight other California producers. We all share a commitment to the quality of the final product and an openness to innovation. It was inspiring to collaborate with other exceptional producers from our home state to create these uniquely Californian expressions.”
Old Potrero California Cellar Series #04 was created by taking the company’s toasted barrel rye that has been aged for over 6 years and finishing it in Almanac Beer Co. Imperial Stout Oak barrels for 5 months. Founded in 2010, Almanac Beer Co. is located in Alameda, California. The brewery focuses on making farm-to-table beers by utilizing grains, fruit, and herbs from local family farms.
Stout finished whiskeys have become a common finishing category. While the base whiskey itself is very important, the stout finishing barrel plays just as large a role in the final outcome. In the case of California Cellar Series #04, the utilization of an Almanac Beer Co’s. barrels helps elevate the standard malted rye flavor profile Old Potrero is known for. The sip is full of stout and milk chocolate-influenced notes that play nicely with the base malted rye grain used. Spice helps to balance out the chocolate notes, particularly in the palate, and the lingering finish is a great endcap to the sip. For stout lovers, this is an easy-to-enjoy rye, and one that showcases what a very well done stout finish looks like.
