Press Release

SEATTLE, November 1, 2023 - Westland Distillery is thrilled to welcome the eighth edition of Garryana American Single Malt (50%ABV, 700ml, $149.99 SRP) to their Outpost Range, which celebrates the central ingredients that comprise single malt whiskey - barley, peat and oak. Released annually, the Garryana expressions showcase the provenance of the Pacific Northwest through the use of Quercus garryana, a rare oak indigenous to the region. 7,380 bottles of the newest Garryana will be released globally, and available at fine whiskey retailers nationwide and at www.westlanddistillery.com/shopfront beginning in November.

Exploration is at the heart of all that Westland produces; the eighth edition of Garryana American Single Malt is no exception. Garryana Edition 8 builds on its seven predecessors- incorporating all that has been learned along the way. The sturdy and savory notes of Garry oak expand to a rich berry character with the addition of a Pedro Ximénez (PX) finishing cask in the final bottling.

“Garryana 8 plays on a theme established in editions four and six,” says Shane Armstrong, Master Blender at Westland Distillery. “Each edition is iterative and exploratory – a valley between retrospection and progression.  PX sherry casks recur in this release, all full maturation 500l Butts for 6-8 years, adding an atypical floral backdrop to a vatting defined by Garry Oak spice.”

Westland’s Outpost Range of American Single Malt Whiskeys features three limited-edition expressions that are released annually – Garryana, Colere, and Solum. As a pioneer of the category and a founding member of the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission, Westland has pushed for the final ratification of the category from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), which is expected to be announced this fall.

About Westland Distillery
Founded in 2010 and acquired by Remy-Cointreau in 2017, Seattle’s Westland Distillery brings a new and uniquely American voice to the world of single malt whiskey by exploring possibilities that have been ignored for generations. Along the way, Westland has been recognized as the country’s leading producer of American Single Malt Whiskey and founded the formal establishment of the emerging American Single Malt Whiskey category by starting the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission. While the distillery uses the same basic ingredients and processes used for centuries by traditional Old World single malt producers, it does not simply seek to replicate the results of its Scottish predecessors. Instead, Westland works to create whiskeys that reflect the distinct qualities of its time, place, and culture in the Pacific Northwest. All of Westland’s expressions are distilled at the Seattle distillery from 100% malted barley and fermented with a unique Belgian Saison brewer’s yeast before maturing in one of a variety of cask types, including new American oak, ex-Bourbon, ex-Sherry, and Garry Oak, to name a few.
