For this pick, we partnered with Seelbach’s, which was founded by Blake Riber, also the creator of Bourbonr and the Bourbonr Facebook group. An online-only retailer with a twist, we interviewed Riber to discuss how he’s running his shop differently than everyone else. “Unlocking Craft Spirits” he calls it - seeking out up-and-coming craft distilleries and learning about their process and tasting through their products to find hidden gems.

Lucky Seven has been flying under the radar for most, but those in the know have been reaping all of the spoils. The movie-themed brand has been releasing a number of great whiskeys, all ranging in age, but it's their high aged bourbons that truly shine the most. Their previous The Proprietor releases were 6 year old and 12 year old Kentucky bourbons, and in late 2021 they upped it with a 14 year old release.

In fact, we gave their latest 14 year “The Proprietor” release a rare 4.5 barrel rating on Breaking Bourbon. That’s why we jumped at the chance to select one of their 14 year old bourbon single barrels for our Single Barrel Club. And we did one - SBC #54 “The Unluckiest Proprietor” - and it went FAST! With so much demand from the Single Barrel Club, we immediately reached out to Michael, CEO of Lucky Seven Spirits, and asked if we could get another. Super accommodating, he got samples out to us asap.

For this round two pick, we got on a video chat with Patreon members Clinton and Marcus to make the selection.

We ended up unanimously choosing the barrel, and we (might) even like it better than the first barrel we picked though it's hard to say. The bourbon hits with a perfect sweet-spice balance that's intense but not overly so. It shows its age, but is also bright and lively, so not the tannic oak you might get with some of these older barrels. Clinton picked out the strawberry note immediately, then as we talked and sipped more we all noticed it and couldn't stop thinking about it. It doesn't land like fresh strawberries, but instead with a combined sweetness akin to stewed fruit or strawberry Pop-Tart filling. As a result, we're nicknaming this pick "Strawberry Short Tart."

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Raisin | Oak | Caramel | Graham cracker | Creme brulee | Toasted brown sugar

Palate: Toffee | Caramel | Dark fruit | Raisin | Brown sugar | Allspice | Delicious

Finish: Perfect sweet-spice mix | Caramel | Baking spice | Stewed strawberries | Strawberry Pop-Tarts | Loooooooong
