For this double-header pick we partnered with Keg N Bottle out of California. A California retailer, Keg N Bottle was established in 1981 and has been in business for over 30 years. Keg N Bottle is known for strategically engineered “Liquor Walls” and “Beer Caves.” They carry every different type of liquor imaginable, a wine for every occasion, 1,500 different beers to make you “hoppy,” and over 1,250 different kegs to choose from. Additionally, Keg N Bottle offers national delivery of every single item from their massive selection.

Bulleit Bourbon has been regarded for years as a solid value bourbon by many. The Diageo owned company is well known for their distinctive bottle design and is often a staple in bars across the country. Add in a little mystery as to where the bourbon is actually sourced from, and you have all the ingredients to make for a fantastic barrel pick.

Going into the tasting we knew we wanted to walk away with two bourbon barrel picks. This would allow us to hopefully find two contrasting flavor profiles, and also allow us to have enough for club members to enjoy. The resulting picks turned out to be exactly that, with one being more sweet and one being more spicy.

The 11 year old barrel chosen had barrel code E and yeast strain #3 which the company describes as being more strawberry fruit. This was the barrel we found to be sweeter, most likely being due to the lower rye grain percentage in the mashbill. The 10 year old barrel contained barrel code B and also came from yeast strain #3. This barrel contained richer spice flavors and will please anyone looking for a spicier bourbon, most likely due to its higher rye content. Tasting side by side, their contrasting flavor profiles are dynamic and complement one another nicely.

For the stickers, we based them on a riff of the brand name and also our experience with the pick. You see, normally Bulleit will roll our four barrel samples and that's what you get to pick from. Well they rolled out their normal four and only one was worthy of being selected for the club...so we demanded MORE! An eerie silence set in, and now this part will forever be in distillery lore, but a tumbleweed blew across the table. Just as this standoff couldn’t get any weirder, we made an off-handed Roger Rabbit joke and the brand relented. Four more barrel samples were rolled out to give us a total of eight to choose from! And thus, Shifty Eyes and Andy Devine were born. So do yourself a favor and crack open one (or both) of these bottles while watching Roger Rabbit to fully enjoy them.
