Pick #39 is a single barrel Yellowstone Bourbon in partnership with Grain & Vine. Grain & Vine is located in Brooklyn, NY, and we have now done quite a few picks with them.

We’re excited to bring the club a Yellowstone barrel. It’s a brand that is nationally distributed yet sometimes falls under the radar. It’s also a brand that we haven’t had a chance yet to explore for the club, but that thankfully ends now. We think most will find it to be an easy approachable sipper that will be great to share with friends and family….or hoard it all for yourself too (no judging on our end!)

We selected this barrel quite a while ago, on a scorching night in July of 2020. The barrel samples were provided at cask strength, ranging from 124.3 to 125.5. Two barreled on May 4, 2016 and one was barreled on May 5, 2016. To get down to the bottling proof of 93, we had to add distilled water. In most cases we cringe at the idea of having to water down barrel samples so much...and we of course tasted these at barrel strength as well. But in this case, we were surprised to find the barrel we selected actually tasted better proofed down than it did at barrel strength. A rare occurrence, the proofing process smoothed out its rough edges and pulled out cinnamon and caramel notes that were hidden behind a wall of heat at barrel strength.

For the sticker, we kept thinking of Yellowstone...Yogi Bear. Bear....bear...bear...have to incorporate a bear somehow but we wanted to avoid the obvious Yogi Bear reference. Any fans of the show "The Office" are probably familiar with one of the best intros ever - the “Which bear is best?” scene where Jim impersonates Dwight, tormenting him with a question about bears. His finale: "Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica." We kept coming back to that, and played off the concept for the sticker, pictured below. And oh yeah, it’s a honey barrel too!

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Cinnamon | Baking spice | Yellow cake | Anise | Inviting

Palate: In-your-face caramel | Light oak | Dry vanilla | Sweet overall

Finish: Cinnamon | Brown sugar | Sweet | Lingering
